FACTIONS

There are races and cultures in Kateria, but there are also factions of which your character can join! Each faction possesses different qualities and a variety of members, so choose carefully and pick which one you think your character would fit best in! Factions aren't required or necessary, though it is a nice, easy way to meet other Katerians and maybe even form a questing team or two! Some factions or memberships also provide professions, such as the bard and mage colleges.

Keep in mind, however, that not all factions are universally accepted. For instance, a character in the thieves guild probably shouldn't go around announcing their membership, as thieves are generally frowned upon. Another thing to keep in mind is that factions are not permanent like classes are; should you decide that the faction you're in isn't the right fit for your character, you can always leave and choose a new one! Of course, you may have to go through a bit of hazing or questing to join your next faction, but hey, that's where the fun is, right?

ONYX LAMIA

ASSASSINS GUILD

The Onyx Lamia is a guild filled with professional assassins. Its members are essentially the most sinister of people who care not whether they take a life. They're dastardly, devious, and fearsome, and they certainly aren't the type of being you want to cross wrongly. The guild itself holds quite a lot of influence in Kateria despite being shrouded in mystery. They're the people that the royal family goes to when they want someone or something disposed of.

There are, however, quite a few perks to being in the assassin's guild. First and foremost, you will receive training from the most skilled and powerful assassins, and secondly you will receive quite a bit of gold should you take up their assassination quests. Should you be recognized on the street as a member of Lamia, you will likely be feared, though the guild itself guarantees that no mere citizen will mess with you, that's for sure.

CONCERTO COLLEGE

BARDS COLLEGE

Concerto college is the place where bards and other musicians go to study. It allows the bard class to further their studies and also teachers newcomers the way of the note. Magicless bards may also come here to study; it is not a requirement for the bard class to study here, nor is it a requirement that you be a member of the bards class. Essentially, it really is just a pretty, organized way for people interested in music to gather together and study.

The college provides its students and alumni with a place to stay and three meals a day, much like other colleges. It also is fairly inexpensive and provides a nice environment for those who do not wish to venture out and complete quests or partake in combat at all.

WITCHES OF
THE FLAME

OSTRACIZED BEINGS

The witches of the flame are ostracized beings that are either feared or hated for something they have done or seemingly have done. Most of the witches are powerful mages, though there are rogues, warriors, and clerics among them as well. The witches, unlike Lamia, are merely misunderstood; they've either been caught doing magic that has terrified or accidentally injured/killed someone, or they're a member of a family that has done the same. The witches, however, do not take their ostracization lightly; most of them are angry about their accusations and generally avoid contact with anyone who isn't a part of their clan.

The witches are a traveling group, as well. Since they aren't technically allowed in most royally governed towns, they travel from place to place without ever really settling on a home. They are a close-knit bunch, however; most of them are family and those who aren't are still treated like blood regardless. A good bit of them do have a bounty on their heads, however, which is also perhaps why they're always on the run. You won't enter a town where you don't find a picture of at least one of the witches.

BROTHERHOOD OF
THE SWORD

BOUNTY HUNTING GUILD

The brotherhood of the sword is a guild filled with strong fighters who prefer gold over honor that take on private and public contracts all over Kateria. Yes, that's right, they're bounty hunters. They are the first to snatch up quests that involve putting out the flame of the local town's trickiest thief or sniffing out the whereabouts of a two-bit assassin that's been causing a ruckus. The guild itself has been around for quite some time; it traces back five hundred years, at least, and as such the members are all quite close.

The brotherhood allows in any class and any race so long as they can prove themselves in battle. A strict trial is provided for each and every new member, and an even stricter ranking system is in place to keep the newbies from taking up all the good, higher paying quests.

SHADOW COUNCIL

THIEVES GUILD

The Thieves Guild is an organization for the gathering and training of those stealthy and shadowy in nature. Although criminal by its very definition, the local authorities often tolerate the existence of the guild as its presence often greatly decreases, if not eliminates, that of the more unstable or dangerous criminals.

Like any trade guild, the Thieves Guild is an organization of professionals, except that in this case the professionals are thieves, robbers, pickpockets, smugglers, and other enterprising operators. They don't have public guild halls, but in large towns they do tend to gather at a single location, such as a cornerclub, inn, or tradehouse. The thieves guild isn't a particularly close-knit guild by any means, but what do you expect when you're surrounded by thieves? Watch your back.

KATERIAN LEGION

ROYAL GUARDS

The Katerian Legion is the highest of the high; they are the royal guards, the knights to the royal family, and as such they spend most of their time in royally governed cities or at the castle itself. They are highly skilled, professionally trained warriors, mages, and archers who would literally die to defend their posts. They possess great morals and wonderful manners, as is to be expected of someone who spends most of their time around royalty. They are fiercly loyal to the royal family as well, and never (openly) oppose anything their rulers do.

Their mortal enemy is the Returners, the group of rebels that opposes the royal family and everything it stands for. They will not hesitate to attack, arrest, or even kill any member of the Returners or any other Kateria threatening guild they come across. As to be expected, they aren't the biggest fans of the thief, assassin, and witches guild either.

THE RETURNERS

GROUP OF REBELS

The Returners are the polar opposite to the Katerian Legion. They are a group of rebels who believe that the royal family and the empire in general is corrupt and they have bonded together and formed a group of capable, strong fighters to rise up and possibly (hopefully) overthrow the government altogether. The returners have all been wronged in some way or another, it seems, and if they haven't, they have at least caught sight of something that has disturbed or angered them in some way. The returners fight for a cause and will fight to the death to see that cause put into motion.

The returners, like the witches, are not allowed in royally governed towns, though they don't seem to care as much. Sure, they, too, have bounties, but they are also sneakier and more carefree than the witches. They are vengeance bound and are fueled by their vendettas.

SCHOLARS OF KATERIA

MAGES COLLEGE

The Scholars of Kateria is a guild filled with mages of all denominations. Clerics and other magical classes come here as well to practice and perfect their magical arts. No art of magic is considered evil or taboo here; summoners, necromancers, and poison based classes are all allowed here without a single thought so long as they do not practice their magics on other students. Every faction and race is allowed inside as well, leaving no stone unturned as far as learning goes.

Much like the bards college, the mages college provides a place to sleep for students and alumni alike and also provides them with meals, as well. It also is fairly inexpensive and provides a nice environment for those who do not wish to venture out and complete quests or partake in combat at all just yet.

FACELESS ONES

CORRUPT ROYAL GUARDS

The faceless ones are the ones behind the scenes; they are the closest guards to the king and, as such, know of his corrupt ways. They are twisted, tricky people who turn a blind eye to poverty and other unfortunate happenings in light of serving their master and making sure that he progresses towards whatever goal he wishes.

The faceless ones are unheard of by everyone except the king. Sure, there are some conspiracy theories floating around, but no one really knows this faction even exists. They work in silence and perform their duties in a shroud of mystery.
